2015 Bethany Estate Barossa Valley Old Vine Grenache

2015 Bethany Estate Old Vine Grenache is one of the prized treasures of the Barossa and a much loved variety for Bethany Wines. The grapes for this wine are sourced from three Grenache blocks within the Schrapel family vineyards with vines aged from 50 to over 90 years old. In a spectacular vintage such as 2016, these gnarled old vines produce grapes of intensity, power and beauty and we strive to capture those qualities in this bottle. With a color and nose redolent of dark cherries and hibiscus flowers this wine is immediately seductive. The palate has cherries, wild strawberries and dark spices that intermingle with fine grained tannins to produce a wine with a long finish of spice and cacao.

Description

2015 Bethany Estate Barossa Valley Old Vine Grenache

2015 Bethany Estate Barossa Valley Old Vine Grenache, Fruit from the Schrapel vineyards and a close friend and neighbour went into the creation of this wine. The nose displays that magical alchemy of Barossa Valley Grenache that manages to be both varietal and richly approachable. Crisp blackcurrants, mulberries and freshly shaved pencils typify the nose whilst the dynamic palate holds rich red and black berry fruits within a taught framework of fine grained tannins that fan through a long and perfumed finish. With the structure to age gracefully and the fruit to be enjoyed now the decision to cellar or enjoy now is a difficult one.

Barossa Vintage Comments

The 2015 vintage will be remembered as one of the shortest and fastest we have experienced in years. In spring, near perfect, mild ripening conditions continued through to December/January with below average temperatures. In the second week of January, Bethany Wines recorded 47mm of rainfall at our Barossa Ranges vineyards replenishing soil moisture and setting up the vines for perfect ripening conditions. The warmer weather in February accelerated ripening of the 2014 Bethany Estate Barossa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon with vintage starting on 31st January and ending by the first week of March. In summary the 2015 indicates a great vintage with both above average grape yields and high quality fruit from our old established vineyards.

Bethany Winemaker’s Report

Fermented on skins in the traditional manner for 6 – 8 days at 20 – 25 degrees with juice being racked from the skins and returned for optimal color and fine tannin extraction. Fermentation was initiated prior to racking into American and French oak barrels for two years to allow fruit and palate structure to develop. This method of winemaking results in a modern style of Cabernet with enough oak to give complexity without overshadowing the wine.

Vineyard Notes

The 2014 Bethany Estate Barossa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon fruit was sourced from the Schrapel family vineyards and neighboring vineyards in the Barossa foothills. Traditional viticulture practices were applied with the yield from old vines 6.25t/Ha. The vineyards were hand pruned to 70 buds per vine to limit yields.   Tasting Notes : 2015 Bethany Estate Barossa Valley Old Vine Grenache More about the Town: Bethany, Barossa Valley
