2013 Kirrihill Clare Valley Tullymore Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon – Case
The 2013 Kirrihill Clare Valley Tullymore Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon opens with aromas of ripe plum, juniper berry, hints of eucalyptus and bay leaf. Time in French oak contributes cedar, coffee and cocoa aromas. The palate is restrained and structural. Fine tannins from both fruit and oak give the wine a seamless length. This is a wine that has been grown and made with the future in mind.
The fruit expression in this wine is directly descendant from this famous vineyard. As winemakers we aim to preserve the amazing and concentrated fruit flavors through minimal intervention. The French oak used helps balance the tannins whilst not over powering them.
Vineyard – The fruit for this wine was sourced from the Tullymore vineyard in the North eastern foothills of the Clare Valley. This vineyard has produced medal winning wines ever since the first crop. Grown on deep red loam and quartz volcanic rock on east facing slopes with an elevation of 450 meters makes this one of the best sites in Clare to grow Cabernet Sauvignon.
Growing Conditions – Excellent ripening conditions prevailed in the Clare Valley this vintage. Warm days and cool nights allowed steady flavor development and acid retention. Good winter rains followed by a warm spring set the vintage up for near perfect conditions. A January heatwave nearly undid all the great lead up until 90mm of rain fell slowing ripening down and returning the very favorable growing conditions that has led to this fantastic wine.
Winemaking – Each parcel of fruit received a cold soak in open top fermenters. The ferment was regularly pumped-over to maximize color, flavor and tannin extraction from the skins. The wine was gently pressed off to a selection of 25% new French oak and 75% seasoned French oak hogsheads. The wine spent 20 months in oak.
